The first time in history, with the intension of reducing coins shortage in the region, standard coins were directly distributed by the Central Bank to the commercial banks’ branches located in Northern Province. Currency Department enabled all banks functioning in North to collect coins at the Regional Office – Kilinochchi in order to distribute to the general Public.
3,664,000 number of coins worth of Rs. 20.578 million distributed on 18 January 2018 and 3,040,000 number of coins worth of Rs.17.044 million again distributed on 29 November 2018 at the Regional Office – Kilinochchi.
Five Sub-Help Desks are in operation at District Secretariats in all five Districts of Northern Province in addition to the Help Desk available at Regional Office – Kilinochchi with a view to guide and assist public on financial aspects.
The study commissioned by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka urges a fresh approach to address post-war socio-economic challenges in the North by building on its existing regional capacity and resources, launched by Hon. Finance Minister. Mangala Samaraweera with the presence of Hon. Parliamentarians, UN representatives, members of donor agencies, the Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, Secretary to Treasury and other senior officials on 22 February 2019 at Ministry of Finance.
This offers a forward-looking blueprint to realise the potential of the North and contribute to the national economy as well as draws attention to the legacies of war on society and economy that underscore the imperative for a unique policy approach.
